Amandeep in semifinals

BANGKOK: Asian bronze medallist Amandeep Singh scored an impressive win to inch a step closer to Olympic qualification when he beat Mongolia’s Asian champion Purevdorj Serdamba here on Tuesday.

Light-flyweight Amandeep started tentatively against Serdamba but opened the gap in the fourth and final round to win 19-14 for a place in the 48kg semifinals, in the first Asian Olympic qualifying tournament.

On Tuesday, Amandeep opened with one point lead after the first round but his Mongolian opponent shot back to go two points up midway through the bout. The two were tied at the end of the third round before Amandeep opened up with scoring punches to win.

In the 60kg however, India suffered a setback. Diwakar Prasad lost to Asian bronze medallist Houman Karani of Iran 7-13 in the quarterfinals.

On Wednesday, Dilbag Singh (69kg) and Manpreet Singh (91kg) will be in action.
