Chennai: Chandigarh Lions edged out Chennai Superstars in a thrilling contest by one wicket in the opening match of the Indian Cricket League 50’ at Mayajaal on Sunday. Put in to bat, the Chennai team found the going tough. Hemant Kumar (26) strove hard to steady the innings but he was run out after getting a start. Chennai never managed any substantial partnership and wickets fell at regular intervals. Off-spinner Rajesh Sharma (four for 45) was the wrecker-in-chief for the Lions. The only spark for Chennai Superstars was the captain’s knock. He hit 41 off 40 balls. Chandigarh Lions was struggling at 38 for five thanks to fine bowling of R. Jesuraj (two for 26) and G. Vignesh (three for 26). But Chandigarh recovered when Bipul Sharma (35) and Chetan Sharma (69 n.o.) added 79 runs for the sixth wicket. When last man Love Ablish walked in, Chandigarh required 17 runs. Ablish survived seven balls without scoring as Chetan Sharma guided his team home amidst excitement all round. Chetan Sharma was declared the man of the match. Points: Chandigarh Lions 5, Chennai Superstars 0. The scores: Chennai Superstars 165 in 35.5 overs lost to Chandigarh Lions 167 for nine in 37.5 overs (C. Sharma 68 n.o.).
