THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Railways with consistent performances in all the six apparatuses lifted the men’s team title of the 48th Senior National gymnastics championship here on Wednesday. The champion side had a tally of 67.40 points in floor, 68.75 in pommel horse, 68.20 in rings, 69.95 in vault, 64.75 in parallel bars and 63.85 in horizontal bar as it finished with a total of 402.90 points, a good ten points more than second-placed Services. Only in the horizontal bar did the Railway side (63.85 points) trail behind Services (64.80). The other scores for the Services side were 65.60 (floor), 64.45 (pommel horse), 65.10 (rings), 67.70 (vault) and 64.85 (parallel bars). The Services side logged 392.50 points as it clinched the silver ahead of last year’s winner Uttar Pradesh (389.60). The holder side which otherwise was very much in the race for the second spot was let down by its team in the last event — horizontal bar — wherein it could garner only a disappointing score of 61.90 points. This after, having tallied 66.15 in floor, 63.85 in pommel horse, 66.75 in rings, 66.45 in vault and 64.50 in parallel bars. Andhra Pradesh (369.15), Punjab (364.55) and Madhya Pradesh (356.00) followed the three front-ranking States in that order in the final standings. Meanwhile, the championship continued to generate unnecessary controversy as the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education authorities failed to keep their last night promise of releasing the floor arena for the competition and also in the confusion that reigned over the participation of the Tamil Nadu team. The final standings: Men (team event): 1. Railways (402.90 points), 2. Service (392.50), 3. Uttar Pradesh (389.60), 4. Andhra Pradesh (369.15), 5. Punjab (364.55), 6. Madhya Pradesh (356.00).
