Karnataka Circle triumphsKarnataka Circle regained the BSNL All India football tournament title. Striking once in either half, the host downed last year’s winner West Bengal 2-0 to lift the trophy for the sixth time in seven editions at the Football Stadium here on Wednesday. Karnataka dominated the proceedings throughout though that it was Bengal’s Gopal Das who fired the first salvo, but way off the target. A swift counter from the left and Ayan Chowdhary put it neatly across to Gopal Daswho, with just custodian Sundaramurthy to beat, shot wide. Karnataka took the lead in the 28th minute when striker Kadiravan on the turn unleashed a 30-yard shot, following a Mohd Ali square, to the roof of the net past a bewildered R.N. Singh Roy under the Bengal goal. In the second session too, the host played positively and went further ahead this time with Md. Nazeem Bepari bulging the net from close following a goalmouth melee. The organisers, Karnataka Circle Sports & Cultural Board (KCSCB) honoured four eminent former footballers from the State. Olympians Ahmed Khan, Varadaraj (both 1948 and 1952 Olympics), T. Shanmugam (1952 Olympics) and Arumainayagam (1962 Jakarta Asian games gold medallist) were felicitated with a shawl, bouquets and mementoes.
