Neelam reinstated

NEW DELHI: Discus thrower Neelam Jaswant Singh, who underwent a two-year suspension for a doping violation, has been reinstated following mandatory testing prior to her comeback to competition.

In a communication to the Athletics Federation of India (AF) on Monday, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) stated that Neelam had completed her compulsory re-instatement testing and wished the athlete a “successful return to competition”.

Neelam, though her suspension ended on August 11, 2007, had to complete three out of competition testing and a fourth test involving the complete range of banned substances just before re-entry as per IAAF rules. Her fourth test was completed recently at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Penang, Malaysia.

Neelam had tested positive for stimulant pemoline at the World athletics championships in Helsinki in 2005.

She was first exonerated by the AFI and then suspended for two years. She challenged her ban in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Lausanne, but lost her appeal.

She has been based in Canada since then, but returned home recently and is expected to compete in domestic competitions this season.
