AITA to investigate Bhupathi’s revelation

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has taken a serious note of the revelation made by Mahesh Bhupathi with regard to the Davis Cup tie against the Netherlands that India had won 3-2 at Jaipur in 2006.

“It is a serious issue that Mahesh Bhupathi has brought out which has got international publicity. This is the first time we have heard of any such thing. I spoke to the captain (Jaideep Mukherjea) and he had not heard anything about it.

“There is no history and it looks an isolated stray incident. Indian tennis is absolutely clean but we will conduct an inquiry to ascertain whether any other members of the Indian Davis Cup teams had experienced any such thing, over the years”, said the secretary general of the AITA, Anil Khanna.

Bhupathi had mentioned to the media at Melbourne that he had got a call to throw a match in the Davis Cup tie against Holland. He eventually went on to win both his singles and clinched the tie for the host.

“The country’s image should be kept clean. We will talk to the players and thoroughly investigate the matter”, assured the AITA secretary general.
