Indian Bank wins title

Paramakudi: Indian Bank (Chennai) won the men’s title in the Ayira Vaisya Basketball Club State-level basketball tournament defeating Southern Railway (Chennai) 71-69 for its third win in the last match of the semifinal round-robin league on Sunday.

Southern Railway finished runner-up, losing only to Indian Bank.

Southern Railway led 24-17 at the end of the first quarter and 39-37 at the end of the second. From there it was a neck-to-neck fight between the teams and the lead changed often before Indian Bank clinched the issue at 71-69.

Armed Police (Chennai) beat Loyola College (Chennai) 49-39 for its only win and finished third.

National BC triumphs

In the women’s section, National BC (Chennai) won the title defeating Rising Star BC (Chennai) 48-39 for its third win in the four-team league.

Rising Star BC finished second losing only to National BC and Sethu EC (Madurai) finished third defeating Armed Police (Chennai) 40-38 for its only win.

Indian Bank 71 (Thangadurai 21, Puvaneswaran 17) bt Southern Railway 69 (Saravana Raja 19, Venkatesh 14); Armed Police 49 (Rajendran 19, Chandra Mohn 12) bt Loyola College 39 (Prem 10).

National BC (Chennai) 48 (Sumitha Suren 12, Vidya Mani 11) bt Rising Star BC 39 (Vijayalakshmi 12, Karpagam 10); Sethu EC 40 (Sukanya 11, Tamil Selvi 10) bt Armed Police 38 (Rajitha 14, Pavalavalli 11).

Gavaskar CC posts win

At Tuticorin, Gavaskar Cricket Club beat Seconds Cricket Club ‘A’ by one wicket in the Canara Bank-TDCA first division league on Sunday.

The scores: Seconds CC ‘A’ 194 for six in 45 overs (Ramesh 69) lost to Gavaskar CC 198 for nine in 42 overs (Balamurugan 42).

Kishore is champion

At Madurai, V. Kishore Kumar of Thiagarajar School of Management, with 4.5 points out of a possible five, won the title in the open category in the State-level chess tournament on Sunday.

Gold for Mohit

K. Mohit Sudhan of Lechatelier School won the gold in men’s 50m freestyle in the Madurai district Pongal swimming meet recently.

Four gold for Kavinadu Youth SC

At Devekottai, Kavinadu Youth Sports Club (Pudukottai) athletes cornered glory by winning all the four gold medals at stake in the State-level mini-marathon on Saturday.

The results (all winners): Men: 12km: P. Loganathan; Boys: 6km: S. Sankar Raja Pandiyan; Women: 8km: L. Suriya; Girls: 4km: R. Mala.

Basketball tournament

At Dindigul, the 14th annual State-level Sax Memorial basketball tournament for the Rtn. G. Sundararajan Manivizha Trophy will be organised by Sax memorial Basketball Club from February 8 to 12.
