LONDON: David Graveney’s 10-year stint as England’s chairman of selectors has come to an end and Geoff Miller, his No.2 for almost the whole of his reign, has been appointed in his place. Graveney has given the England selection process thought, provided a background of statistics and hard work that has rarely been given to the job before and, most importantly, backed Duncan Fletcher in the period from 1999-2006 when England went from the bottom of the world ratings to Australia’s great rivals. His reward for 10 years devotion to duty is to be named performance manager. Miller will be expected to take England one step further although they are no longer the force that won the Ashes in 2005. Perhaps he is too much like Graveney quiet, given to taking thought before he speaks as well as being a spin bowler who won 35 Test caps to provide new ideas and dynamic leadership but, as he has shown in recent years he will let no-one down.
