Energy efficiency in healthcare sector

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: The Confederation of Indian Industry will organise a conference on “Efficient Energy Management Practices in Healthcare Industry” here on January 23.

A release from the healthcare sub-committee (Southern Region) of the confederation said the aim was to create awareness on energy conservation and to share information on the best practices on conserving electrical energy in hospitals. Energy efficient building designs, best energy monitoring practices, preventing waste in energy consumption and use of viable alternative sources of energy would be some of the topics to be discussed.

Investments

According to estimates, Indian hospitals spent about Rs. 1,000 crore every year on energy needs and this was expected to double in the next three years with the Government planning to raise investments in healthcare. Modern hospital buildings consumed 50 per cent more energy than other buildings.

An energy management programme, including awareness campaigns and large-scale investment projects, would help conserve energy. About 100 delegates were expected to participate. Hospital promoters, planners, architects, senior maintenance managers, hospital management consultants and hospital administrators would attend the meet.
