Lakhs worth of artefacts looted Crime notes

BANGALORE: Thieves broke into a business establishment in Commercial Street police station limits on Wednesday night and looted gold ornaments and antique articles worth lakhs of rupees and Rs. 37,000 cash.

While it is said that the thieves had made away with valuables estimated at Rs. 40 lakh, the police put the value of the stolen goods at Rs. 16 lakh.

According to the police, the theft took place at India Heritage Centre on Plain Street in Shivajinagar.

The shop, jointly owned by five friends, sells gold ornaments, rubies, antique articles and artefacts from Nepal and other countries, the police said.

The Commercial Street police, who have registered a case, suspect that the security guard and another employee of the business establishment might have committed the crime. The two were at large, the police said.

Killed in accident

A college student was killed and his two friends were injured after a lorry knocked down their motorcycle on Benniganahalli flyover in Mahadevapura police station limits on Wednesday night.

The police gave the name of the dead as Karthik (20) of Lingarajapuram.

His two friends from the same locality were riding pillion with him on the motorcycle.

The K.R. Puram traffic police have registered a case.

In another incident, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run case reported from Mahadevapura Ring Road early on Thursday.

The police gave the name of the dead as Bheemaiah (55), an employee of a saw mill.
