Madurai enters quarterfinals

Tirunelveli: Ateek Fazal’s unbeaten 108 helped Madurai defeat Salem by 85 runs and enter the quarterfinals of the ICL Mahaveer Chand memorial Trophy inter-district (under-13) cricket tournament at Sankarnagar on Thursday.

The scores: Madurai 216 for three in 30 overs (Ateek Fazal 108 not out) bt Salem 131 in 27.3 overs; Theni 176 for six in 30 overs (Sujeth Kannan 55) bt Krishnagiri 92 for nine in 30 overs; Nammakkal 64 in 21.3 overs (Sunilkumar four for 13) lost to Erode 66 for no loss in 13 overs; Ramanathapuram 139 in 30 overs bt Dindigul 82 in 26.4 overs (Sanjeeve three for 16); Nagapattinam 136 in 25.3 overs (Arun Niwas 66) lost to Thiruvallur 137 for nine in 29.1 overs (Arun Niwas three for 24); Puducherry 112 in 29.4 overs lost to Coimbatore 116 for no loss in 18.3 overs (Hari Nisanth 66 not out); Kanyakumari 47 in 20.4 overs (Aravinth three for 10) lost to Kanchipuram 51 for no loss in 8.4 overs; Tirunelveli 126 for eight in 30 overs lost to Cuddalore 127 for nine in 29.3 overs (Giriwin Naisingh five for 23).

Easy for St. Peter’s CC

At Karaikudi, St. Peter’s CC (Kodaikanal) defeat Karaikudi Town CC by 112 runs in the 25th annual CECRI State-level Twenty20 cricket tournament on Thursday.

The scores: St. Peter’s CC (Kodaikanal) 202 for five in 20 overs (N. Murugesan 57, K. Vinothkumar 51) bt KT CC 90 in 16 overs; Devakottai CC 158 for nine in 20 overs (Selvaganapathy 62) bt Gangai Brothers (Sivagangai) 94 for eight in 20 overs; Hotel Jagan CC (Karaikudi) 152 for seven in 20 overs bt Pudukottai Eleven 48 in 11 overs; KLN College of Engg. (Madurai) 120 for eight in 20 overs lost to Devakottai CC ‘B’ 121 for nine in 20 overs; Govt. Semifinalists spotted

At Tirunelveli, Calicut (six points) and Pune (4) from the four-team Group ‘A’ and Panjabi (6) and Mumbai (4) from Group ‘B’ league qualified for the knockout semifinals of the all India inter-University women’s kho-kho tournament on Wednesday.

The results: League: Group ‘A’: Calicut bt Punjab 14-6; Pune bt Delhi 11-2; Calicut bt Pune 20-8; Punjab bt Delhi 14-4. Group ‘B’: Panjabi bt Utkal 18-2; Mumbai bt Shivaji 13-9.

BSNL triumphs

At Dindigul, BSNL (Chennai) lifted the Irulappan Memorial Trophy by emerging winner of the 30th annual State-level open basketball tournament at Batlagundu on Wednesday.

There was a three-way tie for the honours with BSNL, SAI BC (Salem) and Young Stars BC finishing with four points each (two wins and a loss) at the end of the semifinal league and the teams were placed in that order on quotient.

The results: League (third round): SAI BC (Salem) 81 (Ramakrishnan 20, Karthick 15) bt Nagarajan Memorial BC (Madurai) 68 (John Paul Patich 17, Kamal 14); BSNL (Chennai) 68 (Gnanavel 22, Sivarajan 18) bt Young Stars BC 57 (Premkumar 16, Jeyachandran 14, Saravanan 11).

Shri Renuga wins

At Theni, Shri Renuga Textiles CC lifted the TDCA-HDFC Bank Trophy defeating HDFC Bank CC by 76 runs in the final of the district-level cricket tournament on Tuesday.

The scores: Shri Renuga Textiles CC 130 in 20 overs (Ilango 45) bt HDFC Bank CC 54 in 13.3 overs. Special Awards: Best batsman: Ilango; Best bowler: Sudheesh (HDFC).

Manoj scalps six

At Tuticorin, a six-wicket haul by Manoj (six for 31) helped TAC CC register a 163-run victory over VOC CC in the Canara Bank-Tuticorin DCA third division league recently.

The scores: First division: DCW CC 175 in 41 overs (Rajan 46, Bakiraj 36) bt Power CC 139 in 37.2 overs.

Second division: Young Waves CC 146 in 32 overs lost to Kayal CC 147 for six in 30.1 overs (Soofi 61 not out).

Third division: TAC CC 225 in 34.4 overs (Suyambulingam 52, Ashok four for 28, Vallinayagam four for 26) bt VOC CC 62 in 14.5 overs (Manoj six for 31); Spic CC 123 in 26.4 overs (Guruswamy 51, Murukanantham four for five) lost to TRC CC ‘A’ 1 24 for four in 30 overs.
Srinivasan shines

At Coimbatore, fine bowling by left-arm spinner J. Srinivasan (five for 14) enabled Coimbatore Friends CC defeat Friends Recreation Club by seven wickets to emerge champion of the Texcity Twenty20 cricket tournament on Thursday.

Chasing a target of 96, Coimbatore Friends, thanks to C.R. Ananda Shankar’s unbeaten 45, scored the required runs with six overs to spare.

The scores: Final: Friends RC 96 in 19.4 overs (J. Srinivasan five for 14) lost to Coimbatore Friends CC 97 for three in 14 overs (C.R. Ananda Shankar 45 not out).
