Indian team drops charge against Hogg
Special Correspondent
Chennai: The Indian cricket team has dropped the charge of using abusive language — a level 3 offence in the ICC Code of Conduct — against Australian spinner Brad Hogg.
The announcement followed a meeting between rival captains Anil Kumble and Ricky Ponting, convened by the ICC’s Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, in Perth on Monday. Hogg, after the controversial second Test in Sydney, was charged by Indian team manager Chetan Chauhan with using abusive language against Kumble and M.S. Dhoni. Kumble said it was time to forget what happened in Sydney. “Ricky [Ponting] and I had a discussion with Ranjan [Madugalle] and after that it was important that the game must move on.” The Indian captain also observed that cricket was larger than any individual.
Hogg said: “It is a kind gesture, a lovely gesture by the Indian team.” The pre-series agreement between the two sides relating to disputed catches has, however, been scrapped. The umpire will not take the fielder’s word if he is not convinced about a catch being held legally.
