“Ties with AIADMK strong”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Indian National League continues to be a part of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led front and its ties with the party are strong, State president M. Basheer Ahamed said here on Tuesday.

Mr. Ahamed, who was elected national president of the party, told reporters that it would review its ties if the AIADMK entered into an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. During a meeting with INL office-bearers, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa had made it clear that she would not align with the BJP.

Demanding increase in reservation for Muslims in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Ahamed said the quota fixed by the State Government (3.5 per cent) was less compared to the Muslim population. The number of Muslim candidates selected by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission recently was less than one per cent.

Criticising the Centre and the State for their failure to control prices of essential commodities, Mr. Ahamed said increasing the price of petroleum products would have an adverse impact.

He demanded the Centre implement the Sachar Committee report. The Tamil Nadu Government should take over cement units.

The party would stage a demonstration during Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the State, he added.
