German tourists rescue mongrel

In safe hands: Veterinary surgeon K. Vairavasamy attending to the injured stray dog rescued by two German tourists in Madurai on Sunday.
MADURAI: It was a stray dog wailing on the roadside with both its hind legs crushed, apparently in an accident.
Though hundreds of people were passing through the busy East Masi Street in Madurai on Sunday, hardly anyone cared to rescue the dying mongrel until two German nationals came forward.
Mila Pavan and Isabella Von, who were on a holiday, administered first aid and then headed for the Tourism Information Centre to locate a veterinary clinic.
After offering bread and biscuits to the immobile and semi-conscious dog, they carried it in an autorickshaw to the veterinary polyclinic where clinician I. Chinnadurai and veterinary surgeon K. Vairavasamy attended to it.
“The dog had multiple fractures in both the hind legs and one of its fingers was missing. It appears to be a hit-and-run case. After skin and muscle sutures, we have applied a plaster of Paris splint. After it recovers, plating and vaccination has to be done,” Dr. Vairavasamy said.
Ms. Mila Pavan, a photographer, and Ms. Isabella Von, a graphic designer, assisted the doctor during the surgery.
“You need not be an animal lover to do this. We have saved many injured animals. Nowhere in the world dogs and cattle move freely on the roads like here,” Ms. Pavan said.
The tourists have named their newly adopted dog ‘Florito’ (freshly blossomed flower).
“This dog needs a lot of care to recover. We have decided to take him with us to Germany,” she said.
After obtaining a certificate from the veterinary doctor, they intend to seek special permission from an international airliner to take the recuperating dog on board.
‘Florito’ is in safe hands and will be in a new home soon.
