Travelling on the narrow stretch with full of encroachments on either side has long been a tiresome and risky. The widening work is progressing as part of the Rs. 70-crore Tirupur road development project announced by the Chief Minister last year.

At present, the road width is 7 m. “We are planning to double the size of the width. After constructing a 1.2-m wide median, the road will have 7.3 m each on either side,” an official said.

The highways department has paid charges to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to shift 153 lamp poles on the margins of the stretch.

The board has begun the work. Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan during a review meeting has instructed officials to complete the work by March 2008.

The work has been taken up at an estimated cost of Rs. 8 crore.

The revenue department was asked to remove encroachments on the road.

There major bridges on Avanashi-Tirupur-Palladam corridor will be widened at a cost of Rs. 5.3 crore. The two-lane bridge near Tirupur Corporation office will be made four-lane with the construction of a new bridge. Similar bridges will come up near Tirumuruganpoondy and Chinnakarai. Sources said estimates have been prepared and sent for Chief Engineer’s approval.
