Knitting division of export firm gutted; employees escape unhurt

Damaged: The fire that broke out at an exporting firm at Chinnakarai, on the outskirts of Tirupur, on Tuesday.

TIRUPUR: A major fire broke out at the knitting division of Sakthi Knitting Limited at Chinnakarai near here on Tuesday.

Workers on night shift noticed the flames around 1.30 a.m. of Tuesday. As many as 40 people from Fire and Rescue Services with the help of four fire tenders from Tirupur and Palladam, extinguished the fire by 9.30 a.m.

Though the roof of the more than 21,000 sq ft building collapsed, all the workers escaped unhurt.

Palladam fire station officials said that preliminary investigations revealed that the cause of the accident could be electric short circuit.

S. Sonachalam, Director, Finance, of the company, said that six of the 31 imported knitted machines were damaged and the loss was likely to be over Rs. 10 crore. The building had stocked nearly 100 tonnes of polyester yarn and a huge volume of lycra and elastic yarns.
