Cadres held for burning effigies

Staff Reporter

ARIYALUR: As many as 115 cadres of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) were taken into custody after burning effigies of former Pattali Makkal Katchi MLA J. Guru at three centres in the district on Tuesday.

They were protesting against his “inflammatory” remarks against Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja at a workers’ meeting of the PMK held here on Sunday.

In retaliation, PMK cadres burnt the effigy of Mr. Raja. In Jayamkondam, 64 DMK volunteers, who allegedly burnt an effigy of Mr. Guru, courted arrest. The DMK cadres launched a similar agitation in T. Pazhur and UdDayarpalayam, where 51 cadres were arrested.

Nineteen PMK men were taken into custody at Jayamkondam for burning an effigy of Mr. Raja.

All the arrested were released in the evening, the police said.
