TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University will start a ‘laboratory of innovation’ with a view to encouraging students to come out with viable and new projects in production, manufacturing and technological industries. The university’s Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) at Khajamalai campus will run the laboratory, by both assessing the projects and assisting the students with necessary infrastructure, the Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko told the media here on Monday. The objective of the laboratory, to be funded by the university, is to explore modern avenues and applications of all fields and utilisation of the novel proposals from the youth, Dr. Ponnavaikko said. It will kindle the students’ interest in developing industrial growth on the lines of foreign universities, particularly those in Japan. The laboratory will cater to the multi-faceted needs of students by providing equipment, machinery and other related infrastructure. Innovation of every sort — from agro-based principles to advanced computer applications, and from welding to value-addition of products besides fabrication — would be encouraged at the laboratory, which would function as an incubator. Assistance for developing proto-type will also be extended. Earlier, distributing prizes to winners of the project proposal contest on ‘Promotion of youth entrepreneurship,’ organised jointly by the IECD and the Rotary Club of Tiruchi, Dr. Ponnavaikko underlined the need to encourage innovation among the students. He said the country’s educational system provided little opportunities in this regard, despite potential proposals from the youth. He appreciated a few prize-winners for their innovative approach in preparing bricks. In his report, IECD Director K. Parthasarathy said the contest aimed at creating awareness among the youth about entrepreneurship opportunities. As many as 65 students, including 48 girls from three higher secondary schools and 25 colleges, presented their projects. Governor of Rotary District-3000 Rajadurai G. Michael was among those who spoke.
