HAVING FUN: Children at ‘Apna Bana Lo’ organised by Chennai Food Bank at Kishkinta on Sunday. TAMBARAM: Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology A. Raja on Sunday lauded the efforts of the Rajasthani community for their service to the downtrodden sections in Tamil Nadu. “The contribution made by the Rajasthani community is commendable. It shows the integrity of the country,” Mr. Raja said at ‘Apna Bana Lo’, a function organised by Chennai Food Bank. Project started in 1993The Chennai Food Bank — a project of the Rajasthan Youth Association Madras Metro Trust — was started in 1993 and has been collecting foodgrains from various households and distributing them to more than 150 institutions in and around Chennai under the ‘Muthi bar anaaj’ (fistful of grains) scheme. At the function organised on Sunday at Kishkinta amusement park, Tambaram, Mr. Raja said the Rajasthani community had settled down in Tamil Nadu for various reasons including business, but had never overlooked the needs of the downtrodden and poor. Noble serviceHe said that reaching out to the needy by supplying food and foodgrains was a noble service. The Central and State governments alone cannot fulfil the requirements of all sections of the society, especially the weaker sections, Mr. Raja said, adding that there was a need for more such effort from voluntary organisations. On Sunday, about 12,000 children and senior citizens from various welfare homes came to the amusement park. Nearly 300 buses of educational institutions picked them up from their institutions. A Coast Guard helicopter made a few rounds just a few metres above the function venue, as children were enthralled. Music showA light music show by cine music director Srikanth Deva had the children on their feet. Among others who took part in the function included Inspector General Rajendra Singh, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East), S.A. Bhat, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Overseas Bank and members of Chennai Food Bank. The children and senior citizens were treated to a day full of music, fun, games, gifts and food.
