Call to open taluk police station in Aranthangi

Chamber of Commerce sends memorandum to Chief Minister

ARANTHANGI: The Aranthangi Chamber of Commerce has urged the State Government to start the taluk police station in Aranthangi for ensuring a more efficient maintenance of law and order in the town.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the president of the Chamber L. Kailsanathan said that the jurisdiction of the Aranthangi town police station, which was started in 1949, remained the same for the past five-and-a-half decades.

Effective maintenance

Referring to the day-light robbery at a couple of houses in the town recently, the memorandum pointed out that creation of a taluk police station would facilitate effective maintenance of law and order in and around Aranthangi.

More colonies

Pointing out that a number of residential colonies had come up in the outskirts of the town, the memorandum said that there was a strong case for starting a taluk police station in the town to effectively arrest anti-social activities.

Further, the strength of population in the town had also gone up from 15,000 in 1977 to about 40,000 now.

According to police sources, the station had jurisdiction up to Maramadakki village, about 20 km on the north; Balakrishnapuram village about 20 km on the east; and Othakadai Chathirapatti about 14 km on the west of the town.

The break-up of the personnel sanctioned in 1949, was one post of Inspector; three Sub-Inspectors; 12 Head-Constables; 23 Grade I constables and 10 constables, police sources said.
