Court allows students to write exams

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Scores of students from other States, who were admitted to engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu on the basis of marks scored in improvement examinations conducted by their States, have been permitted by the Madras High Court to appear for semester examinations.

Passing interim orders on a batch of writ petitions, Justice V. Dhanapalan, however, said these students’ examination results should not be declared till finality was achieved on the writ petitions.

The unaided engineering colleges, in their petitions, said the Directorate of Technical Education had objected to the admission of these students and withheld permission for the entire category.

In his order on Saturday, Mr. Justice Dhanapalan pointed out that practical examinations had been conducted for these students, who had also been issued hall tickets by Anna University, Coimbatore.

The matter required a detailed hearing, the Judge said. The question was whether students from other States, who had undergone improvement examinations as per the system prevailing in those States, could be permitted to be admitted to colleges in Tamil Nadu. He adjourned the matter to February 12 for final hearing. The colleges said admission formalities were completed in July 2007 and the list of selected candidates was forwarded to the authorities for approval.
