MP seeks shuttle train service
Staff Reporter
TIRUPUR: K. Subbarayan, Coimbatore MP, on Saturday appealed to the Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, to introduce a shuttle service between Coimbatore and Erode. In his pre-budget memorandum to the Minister, Mr. Subbarayan said that there had been a surge in passenger traffic in Coimbatore-Tirupur-Erode corridor following growth in hosiery and textile industry. The introduction of shuttle service will ensure smooth passenger movement, he noted.
Mr. Subbarayan wanted the ongoing construction of rail overbridges in the State to be executed on time. The ordinate delay in completion had been causing hardship to the public. He also proposed new routes to introduce fast passenger trains. They are Coimbatore-Madurai; Madurai-Nagercoil; Tiruchi-Chennai; Mayiladuthurai-Nagercoil; and Coimbatore-Chennai.
He wanted early completion of gauge conversion between Podanur and Dindigul. The MP demanded forming of new rail line between Tirupur and Karur connecting Kangeyam and Vellakoil, which is expected to reduce travelling distance from Tirupur and Tuticorin port. Further, this would serve as an alternative route to Madurai from Coimbatore.
Mr. Subbarayan demanded introduction of a circular track connecting various parts of Coimbatore. He suggested formation of circular railway link covering Coimbatore Junction, Coimbatore North, Ganapathy, Peelamedu, Singanallur, Irugur and Podanur.
