World-class transport facility to be set up in Mysore

Anil Kumar Sastry

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 38 crore

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will soon set up a world-class public transport facility in Mysore featuring intelligent transport system and lesser vehicular emission levels.

The corporation will get funding under Global Environment Facility Project — an international initiative — in this endeavour.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Friday, KSRTC Managing Director A.P. Joshi said that Mysore was among the eight cities in the country to be selected for funding under GEF project. KSRTC is promised funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for construction of five Inter Modal Transit Centres (IMTC) and upgrading of bus stations in Mysore. All these projects put together will make the public transport system vibrant in Mysore.

Mr. Joshi said an ideal city to develop a state-of-the-art public transport system should have less than one million population and Mysore fitted the suit the best. An efficient public transport system using environment-friendly fuel would naturally discourage use of private modes of transport and result in lesser environment pollution, he noted.

The three areas under GEF are setting up an intelligent transport system, use of environment-friendly fuel and upgradation of bus depots. The corporation will deploy Global Positioning System (GPS) to track movement of buses. With GPS, the corporation can evolve Passenger Information System (PIS), offering real-time information about arrival of buses at nearly one hundred way-side shelters in Mysore, Mr. Joshi said. The Corporation has already been using ethanol-blended diesel in five of its depots in Bangalore and will extend the same to four depots in Mysore too, according to Director (Security and Vigilance) M.A. Saleem. Of the four bus depots, two catering to the city will be upgraded under GEF. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 38 crore and the funding pattern is yet to be finalised, Mr. Joshi said.
