BANGALORE: Mohameed Haneef, the Bangalore doctor who was recently cleared of charges of terror in Australia, will return to that country only if the Australian Government clearly states he and his family will not be harassed any further. WorryDr. Haneef, who returned to the city from a pilgrimage to Makkah, told a television channel on Friday that he was worried about the possibility Australian Federal Police questioning him and his family members on their return there. “I can consider going back to Australia if I am assured that we family will not be harassed over the same issue,” he said. The events had caused a lot of damage to his career and reputation during the investigation and he would consider claiming compensation only after the completion of the inquiry by the new government. He added he welcomed the inquiry. Dr. Haneef, then a registrar at the Gold Coast Hospital, was arrested and charged in July 2007 in connection with the failed suicide attack on the Glasgow airport by his cousin, Kafeel Ahmed, who subsequently died of burns. ChargesDr. Haneef was charged with providing support to terrorism. The charges were dropped after the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions announced there was no reasonable prospect of a conviction.
