Nurse kills two children, attempts suicide

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: A woman allegedly killed her two children by injecting them a drug and later attempted suicide at her rented house in 4th T Block, Jayanagar, on Thursday night.

The police said Shantha (35), a staff nurse at Jayanagar General Hospital, administered the drug to her son, Samanth (12), a Class VII student, and daughter Mandhaara (8), a Class III student. Shantha, who injected herself too with the same drug from the same syringe, is battling for her life in a private hospital.

The police, who are awaiting the autopsy reports, suspect the drug to be an anaesthetic. According to the police, on Thursday evening Shantha quarrelled with her husband, Venugopal, a real estate agent.

He was reportedly having an affair and used to come home drunk. After Venugopal left the house around 7.30 p.m., Shantha latched the door from inside.

Around 8 p.m. her anxious house owner, who had earlier seen the couple quarrelling violently, peeped through a window and found Shantha in convulsion. He broke open the rear door of the house and rushed the three to hospital. Samanth and Mandhaara were declared brought dead, the police said. The Tilaknagar police have registered a case.
