189 challans issued for various violations by revellers NEW DELHI: Eighty-five people were arrested by the police under various charges during New Year celebrations in the Capital. A total of 189 challans were issued for various other violations by revellers. “Eighty-five people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and later let off on bail. Fifteen people were challaned for dangerous driving, eight for jumping red light and 63 were issued challans for other minor offences like wrong parking. Seven vehicles were impounded,” said a police officer. Forty-four additional companies had been deployed to check drunken driving, over-speeding, triple riding and other such instances between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Armed with alco-meters, policemen were present at several places in the city with emphasis on Connaught Place and adjoining areas. The arrangements were being monitored by Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal himself and several other senior police officers. Also, 19 motorists were challaned for trespassing into the “No Entry” zone as vehicles were not allowed in the Inner, Middle and Outer Circles of Connaught Place from 7-30 p.m. on Monday till the conclusion of the celebrations.
