City guide maps at metro stations now

Smriti Kak Ramachandran

Will have information on the nearest hospital, post office, food joint, market, ATM, bus terminus etc

Information to be printed in Hindi as well as English

Was started as an experiment at Patel Chowk station

NEW DELHI: After offering a trouble-free journey between destinations, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will now double up as a city guide. Passengers alighting from the metro will need to walk up only to the station’s periphery to look for information on the nearest hospital or the name of the closets restaurant.

To offer passengers pointers about their immediate surroundings, DMRC is installing maps outside the metro stations.

Called the city guide maps, these structures in stainless steel are currently being erected at the entry/exit points of metro stations on all three lines.

These hard-to-miss maps are aimed at providing passengers and even passers-by a visual detail of the location they are at and a low-down on some of the major utility and other services in the vicinity.

“The city guide map was started as an experiment at Patel Chowk station. And now we are expanding the service to other stations,” said Anuj Dayal, Chief Public Relations Officer of DMRC.

The maps that have all the necessary information printed in Hindi as well as English are described as a “comprehensive information centre consisting of many required details of the city”.

The city guide maps apart from highlighting the venues chosen for the Commonwealth Games will also give information on the nearest hospital, post office, food joint, market, name and number of the nearest 24 hour chemist shop, hotels (budget and star category), ATMs and banks, historic places and other landmarks.

Details of emergency services, local police station and metro police numbers will also be provided.

“The maps will also serve as tourists’ aid as they will be able to pinpoint amusement and entertainment destinations, information on the railways, airports and bus terminus and important government offices,” said Mr. Dayal.

To ensure that all the necessary changes and alterations in the surroundings are incorporated, DMRC will change the maps every six to eight months.

While Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Chandi Chowk, Vishwavidyala, New Delhi and Barakhamba Road stations will have 23 maps in all, there will be 31 of them at Rithala, Shahadra, Welcome, Rohini East, Kashmere Gate, Inder Lok, Netaji Subhas Place, Pragati Maidan, Pitampura, Tis Hazari, Chawri Bazar, Indraprastha, Patel Chowk, Karol Bagh, Rajouri Garden, Tilak Nagar, Janakpuri West, Uttam Nagar East, Dwarka Mor and Mandi House stations.
