Samuel stars in Chennai Customs’ win

CHENNAI: Samuel’s double strike helped Chennai Customs edge Chennai Soccer Club 2-1 in a CFA senior division league match on Saturday.

Soccer Club had gone ahead in the eighth minute when M. David struck after Manikandan and Bharathiraja had done the spade work from the right.

But the joy was shortlived as Samuel found the equaliser in the 20th minute, capping a solo and five minutes later he hoodwinked goalkeeper Sakthivel again with a neat lob after Asif had provided him the pass.

Earlier in the first division, Madras Eagles defeated Central Excise with a solitary goal scored by B. Maran.

Kavin shines

R. Kavin top scored with 72 to help J.S. Rao CA to a big win over Kanniah CA in the Prahlad CA under-12 cricket tournament being held here.

The scores: Kedar CA 56 in 29.4 overs (Kishore three for 8) lost to Asiatic CA 58 for two in 22.2 overs (Sudharsan 35 not out).

TEIPL 100 for four in 30 overs (Abiram 27) lost to C.S.S.F. 103 for four in 28.4 overs (S. Daryl 28 not out, R. Rahul 26).

J.S. Rao CA 165 for seven in 30 overs (R. Kavin 72, Radeesh Manikandan 32) bt Kanniah CA 89 in 29 overs (Siva 26).

Prahlad CA *B’ 58 in 25.2 overs (M. Bharath three for 12) lost to Future Stars CA 61 for one in 7.1 overs (G. Karthik 30, S. Kaushik 25).

Angal David scalps five

D. Angal David claimed five for 60 as Youngsters defeated Nelson SC by 33 runs in a fourth division ‘A’ cricket match of the TNCA league here recently.

The scores: Div. IV ‘A’: Youngsters 204 in 48.5 overs (V.S. Guhan 45, Manikandan four for 48) bt Nelson SC 171 in 47 overs (Chandramouli 47, D. Angal David five for 60); YMCA (Royapettah) 174 in 47.3 overs (A. Mohan 62) bt Ashok Leyland 114 in 37.3 overs.

Div. IV ‘C’: Chennai Telephones 98 in 39.3 overs (Ranjith Kuruvilla four for 10) lost to Cosmopolitan Club 101 for five in 25.3 overs.

Div. V ‘C’: Varsity Occasionals 164 in 50 overs bt Tiger CC 109 in 34 overs (P.R. Sandheep four for 29); Hunters 236 for nine in 50 overs (Sabarish 54, Ravi Subramaniyam four for 71) lost to Perungalathur CC 238 for two in 30.3 overs (Ramabadran 100 not out, Jagadeesh 61); TVS MSC 107 in 25 overs (K. Rajesh five for 38) lost to Harnath 111 for four in 26.2 overs.

City Police posts win

City Police recovered from a 0-1 deficit to record a 2-1 victory over Southern Railway ‘B’ in the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Saturday.

All the three goals came in the first-half. A field goal by Rajasekharan put Southern Railway ahead in the 16th minute, but the Police team restored parity when Dominic netted four minutes before the half time break.

Murugan of Police scored the match-winner in the 33d minute through a penalty corner.

SAI selection trials

Sports Authority of India will hold selection trials for admission to its training centres, special area games centres and extension centres for the year 2008-09. For SAI training centres the trials are on Jan. 8 and 9 (boxing, football, hockey, kabaddi (boys and girls) and volleyball (girls only) and again on Jan. 21 and 22 (athletics, basketball, volleyball, taekwondo (boys and girls), kabaddi (boys).

It will be January 27 for SAI extension centre (St. Marys HSS, Dindigul) for volleyball (boys), on January 22 (SAI special area games,Nagercoil) for athletics, kabaddi (boys and girls) and again on January 28 and 29 (SAI Special area games, Rajan Thottam, Mayiladuthurai) in athletics, basketball, hockey, volleyball (boys and girls) and weightlifting (boys). SDAT selection meet

In an initiative to provide an impetus to youngsters from the districts, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu will conduct a State selection meet in various disciplines from January 7 to 9 at 8 a.m.

The events are swimming (Shenoy Nagar Pool on January 9), football (Nehru Park on January 9), basketball (Nehru Indoor Stadium on January 9), athletics (Nehru Stadium on January 9), hockey (Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on January 9) and volleyball (Nehru Indoor Stadium on January 7).

Veterans’ tennis

The T.S. Santhanam memorial National veterans’ tennis tournament will be held at the Mylapore Club, under the auspices of the TN Tennis Association, from January 21 to 26.

Events will be held in the above-45, 55, 65 (singles and doubles) categories. C.H. Naidu is the Tournament Director. Entries close on January 11.
