End of the road for Chennai Veerans

Chandigarh: Former champion Bangalore Hi-Fliers defeated Chennai Veerans 4-2 in the fourth Premier Hockey League here on Saturday.

Veerans, which suffered its fourth loss in four outings, is out of the reckoning for a semifinal berth. Veerans went into the lead in the 14th minute through Raghunath, who converted a penalty corner. Bangalore equalised three minutes later when Cheyanna scored.

Bangalore increased the lead in the 40th minute when Len Aiyappa netted off a penalty stroke. Chennai Veerans scored the equaliser in the 49th minute through Adam Sinclair.

Bangalore’s Cheyanna made it 3-2 in the 56th minute and Hari Prasad rounded off the tally with a minute left.

Later, defending champions Orissa Steelers defeated Maratha Warriors 4-2. Orissa got the goals through Ajitesh Rai, Ajmer Singh, Shakeel Abbasi and Damandeep Singh, while for Warriors, Looijem Melchior scored a brace.
