U.S.A. defeats India

PERTH: Meghann Shaughnessy, filling in for Serena Williams, got the United States off to a winning start and Mardy Fish clinched the win over India in the first match of the 20th Hopman Cup.

The No. 2-ranked U.S. team had an unbeatable 2-0 lead after the singles before India pair Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna won the doubles 6-4, 6-4.

Shaughnessy ended a seesawing opening women’s match by winning the last five games against Sania for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Fish secured an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the first of the U.S. team’s three round-robin matches at the international mixed team event with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bopanna in the men’s singles.

The results: Group B: U.S. bt India 2-1 (Meghann Shaughnessy bt Sania Mirza 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; Mardy Fish bt Rohan Bopanna 6-2, 6-4; Sania/ Bopanna bt Shaughnessy/ Fish 6-4, 6-4.
