HELPING THE NEEDY: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi giving away patta for two-acres of land to a beneficiary at the function in Erode on Sauturday. ERODE: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday inaugurated the Erode Corporation, the eighth in the State. The Corporation would come into effect from January 1, 2008. “By inaugurating the Corporation, I’ve been fortunate enough to fructify the dreams of my mentor Periyar, ” he said. Development schemesMr. Karunanidhi also announced developmental schemes for the Corporation as well as neighbouring areas that would soon form a part of the civic body. “Towards providing better infrastructure in terms of a new office for the Corporation, a few high-mast lamps and upgrading the Municipal hospital to a 24-hour hospital with better facilities, the Government sanctions Rs.5 crore.” For the neighbouring areas, a Government Order had been issued announcing the launch of an under ground drainage scheme for Rs.154 crore. Regarding supply of Cauvery water from the Mettur Stanley Reservoir, he said the Government would actively consider the demand and issue an order in the next financial year. Pattas distributedMr. Karunanidhi distributed pattas for two acres of land to poor and marginal farmers and housing pattas to poor people. Recalling the government’s achievements over the past one and a half years, he said so far, 1.60 acres of land had been given to 1,37,925 farmers and 2,50,000 pattas distributed to as many people. Mr. Karunanidhi recalled his long association with Periyar, Erode and the Dravidian movement. “It is in this town that I learnt the lessons of rationalism from my mentor Periyar and there can be no better way to repay my gratitude than by upgrading the Municipality to Corporation.” Union Ministers E.V.K.S. Elangovan and Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, State Ministers, including M.K. Stalin, Government officials and legislators participated. Corrections and clarifications
