A NEW ONE: The site in West Tambaram where a gasifier will come up. TAMBARAM: Preliminary work on a gasifier for Tambaram Municipality began on Saturday. Municipal Chairman E. Mani, Vice-Chairman D. Kamaraj and staff of the local body were present at the function to mark the start of works. Municipal Commissioner R. Sekar said the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply had sanctioned the construction of gasifiers in many urban local bodies as part of efforts to modernise crematoriums throughout the State. In Tambaram, the gasifier would cost around Rs.50 lakh, of which the State government’s share would be Rs.20 lakh. The rest would be from the municipality’s general funds. Mr. Sekar said the gasifier was expected to be completed in three months’ time. A gasifier was commissioned at Chromepet in Pallavaram Municipality in July during the previous council. One was installed in Alandur Municipality, while work on the second one in Pallavaram Municipality would commence soon. How it worksGasifiers are furnaces where wood chips are burnt at very high temperatures and gas from it is directed into the chamber where bodies are cremated. An electrical spark inside the chamber ignites the gas and bodies are burnt at a temperature of 1,200 degrees Celsius, engineers said.
