KOLKATA: The country’s oldest golfing event, the Goodricke East India amateur meet, 11th leg of the LG amateur tour, has attracted the best of talent available in India. The tournament, to be played in stroke play and match play format will see in excess of 100 golfers in fray in the seven-day tournament. Golfers like Abhishek Jha, the winner of the 10th leg RCGC Cup here recently, along with top ranking Simarjeet Singh, Manav Das, Gagan Verma and Jasjeet Singh, among others, will be seen in action. Adding competition to the established stars will be young hopefuls like Rahul Bakshi and Chikkarangappa. The former, a 16- year-old, and the latter a 14-year-old, qualified for the National team which participated in the Asia Pacific championship. Overseas entriesThere are also entries from Bangladesh and the US. The 36-hole stroke play over the first two days will act as the qualifier for a 64-player draw which then sees a knockout championship played over five rounds. Anirban Lahiri won the strokeplay last year beating L. Selvadurai while Himmat S. Rai won the matchplay title beating Surya Prakash. The venue, Royal Calcutta Golf Club, after the onslaught of the monsoon, has seen a great deal of renovation with strategically placed new water bodies and freshly contoured greens providing the perfect setting for a major event of India’s golfing calendar. — Special Correspondent
