GOOD KNOCK: Skipper Mithun Manhas took Delhi to a commanding position against Karnataka on the second day.

Bangalore: Overcast skies and bad light remained the backdrop as Delhi posted a first innings score of 538 against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy super league Pool A match, in progress at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Tuesday.

On the second day, marred twice by bad light, Delhi skipper Mithun Manhas’s 124 (286m, 188b, 20x4, 1x6) helped the visitor stretch its score from the overnight 337 for two to 538 in 154.5 overs. And, as bad light again intervened at 3.54 p.m., Karnataka was zero for no loss in its first innings, with Pradeep Sangwan having bowled just one ball in his first over.

Earlier in the day, overnight centurion Virat Kohli nicked one off the persevering seamer Vinay Kumar (five for 121). The light, however, worsened and play was interrupted for 49 minutes. On resumption, Vinay swung one in past Rajat Bhatia’s defensive blade and rattled the stumps. Manhas however continued to cover drive with élan and found an able ally in Mayank Tehlan (41). Manhas reached his century in style, hoisting left-arm spinner K.P. Appanna for six and then pulled the next one past the mid-wicket ropes.

Manhas and Tehlan shared a 96-run fifth-wicket partnership that helped Delhi inch close to the 500-run mark. The tail hardly wagged, though Pradeep Sangwan’s merry knock (22 not out) that yielded 20 runs in a Vinay over left the Delhi dressing room in good cheer. Delhi with a total of 538 in its kitty can dictate terms as Karnataka will have to play catch-up for the rest of the match.
