Srinagar: The fringes of the famous Dal Lake froze on Monday as the Kashmir valley experienced its coldest day of the season with the mercury dropping to minus 5.4 degrees Celsius while frosty weather pummelled Leh in Ladakh where the temperature was minus 14.
Ice had started forming on the scenic lake here, which serves as the chief draw for tourists, with no let-up in the cold wave sweeping across the valley and even daytime temperature dipping to a chilly 8.8 C, three degrees below normal.
The lake had completely frozen for the first time in the winter of 1963-64 when the then Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister, Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad, drove a jeep on the crest of the lake. Again in 1986, the lake froze and locals played cricket and hockey on the frozen lake.
People faced hardship as water in the taps froze in the city and elsewhere, prompting the authorities to press water tankers into service, official sources said. — PTI
