Forceful plea: A play being staged to create awareness among students about the evils of female foeticide, in Mysore on Monday. MYSORE: Highlighting a social evil — of female foeticide — that is responsible for the skewed sex ratio in the State was the play presented by the All-India Mahila Samskritika Sanghatane (AIMSS) to school students in the city on Monday. The play was staged to bring a social awareness of the obnoxious practice that is widespread in society. The thrust of the play revolved around a strong character Vanitha who resists all pressure from her husband who insists on foeticide as he learns that the sex of the child developing in the mother’s womb was female. However, Vanitha decides to abandon her husband and bring up the child on her own and in this effort, she is supported by her mother-in-law. Raising pertinent questions about the prevalence of a social evil in which the girl child is denied the right to live, the play issues a clarion call to the public to curb this social evil. Scripted by Sudha Kamath, the play will be staged in public places in the run-up to the AIMSS’s State-level convention to be held in the city from January 4, 2008. The play was staged at the Maharani’s Pre-University College for students in a bid to instil awareness among the students about the gravity of the situation and to inspire them to follow the main character of the play who foils her husband’s evil designs. Subsequently, the activists staged the same play K.R. Circle and also near Agrahara, where it drew a large crowd.
