MADURAI: The much-awaited passport office here became operational on Monday with jurisdiction over eight southern districts.
The independent, computerised and air-conditioned office is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and sophisticated software to facilitate expeditious issue of passports.
’This will be the third passport office in Tamil Nadu, and 33rd in the country.
At least 250 applications were received on the first day and passports issued to nine minors, including a 10-day-old baby boy.
The office will provide all services, including issue of tatkal and diplomat passports. “This will be the first air-conditioned passport office in the State. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has agreed, in principle, to establish a touch-screen information system, free of cost, on the office premises. Workload in the Tiruchi office will come down by 50 per cent,” Regional Passport Officer S. Balachandran told The Hindu.
V. Sundararaman took charge as Passport Officer of Madurai.
