Delhi shivers for second day in a row

OUT IN THE COLD: The scene in Delhi on Monday evening.

NEW DELHI: The new week began on a frigid note for the Capital on Monday with the minimum temperature hovering around 4.6 degrees Celsius. Though up by a minuscule 0.2 degree from the season’s coldest so far -- 4.4 degrees -- recorded on Sunday, the cold left the city shivering.

As usual, fog was a perpetual presence during the early morning hours, only to be outwitted later in the day by the soothing rays of a bright sun. Dryness too was in the air with a minimum relative humidity of 27 per cent being recorded. However, the fog did not cause any delays to flights and trains which proceeded more or less according to schedule. The Meteorological Department has forecast another marginal upping of the minimum temperature for Tuesday which has been put down at 5 degrees Celsius. According to the weatherman, travellers can cast their smoggy worries aside for the time being and expect “mist and shallow fog in the morning, but mainly clear skies”.

However, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website warned that the minimum temperature could fall further and reach a mind-numbing 2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

“The cold is tolerable once the sun comes up, but it’s excruciatingly cold in the mornings and evenings. I find it rather hard to sleep without a heater in my room. The worse part is the temperature of running water. Every time I open the tap to wash my hands, it takes me a few seconds to muster up courage to actually put my hands under the stream of water,” said Deepti Kumar, an employee of a private airline.
