BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government has finally issued a notification increasing the number of wards of both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack municipal corporations. While the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will have 60 wards against the existing 47, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) have been divided into 54 wards. The notification, which has been issued under the sub-rule (1) of rule 3 of the Orissa Municipal Corporation (Division of City into Wards, Reservation of Seats and Conduct of Election) Rules, 2003, has sought objections as well as suggestions from the public within 10 days from December 12. In the new arrangement, the BMC will have 24 wards earmarked for general category, while 12 for women candidates. The backward classes will have a share of 16, including five seats reserved for backward classes women. Remaining eight seats have been distributed among ST and SC categories. New identityAfter redrawing boundary of wards, several prominent places have got their new identity. Sahid Nagar, which is now in the ward No. 20, has been brought under the ward No. 35. Utkal University area, Patharbandha Slum, Income Tax Colony, Rajaswa Vihar, Satsang Vihar back side private plot and P&T Colony will be in the ward No. 36. Similarly, VSS Nagar, HB area, Gadeswar hat, VSS Nagar private plot, Hotel Management areas are come under the ward No. 37. Its adjacent ward will be ward No. 38 comprising Gajapati Nagar, IMMT, Survey of India, 7th Battalion, Doordarshan, Institute of Physics and CMPDI Colony. Earlier, several wards had bigger area for which the BMC was facing difficulties to implement different welfare programmes. At a time when more emphasis has been given on urban infrastructure under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission, the reogranisation has become necessary. Similarly, Cuttack’s 48 wards have been reconstituted into 54. Though both corporations heard grumbling voices from corporators who stand to lose their territory after the notification, sources say the Government is keen on going ahead with the reorganisation of wards.
