Match Racing event from Dec. 16

MUMBAI: India’s first International Match Racing event, the Provogue Mumbai International Match Race 2007, will be held at the H20 Complex, Chowpatty from December 16 to 20, according to two-time World sailing champion Farokh Tarapore, president of Match Racing Association of India (MRAI).

The event will be conducted in the J 24 class of boats with four persons on board. The format will be round robin league with each team sailing against each other and the top four moving into the semifinal knock out stage.

Tarapore, Arjuna awardees Cdr. R. Mahesh, world number 45 in the International Sailing Federation Match racing rankings and Aashim Mongia will be captaining three of the five Indian teams in the competition.

Five foreign teams confirming entry in the Grade-III event, offering prize money of $8,000, are Russia, Germany, Sweden, USA and Japan. Russia’s Andrey Arbuzov, ranked 15th and German Ellegast Tino (40th) are two sailors ranked higher than India’s R. Mahesh. — Special Correspondent
