PURE WATER: A reverse osmosis plant installed in Tiruchi Junction.
TIRUCHI: Divisional railway authorities are setting up four reverse osmosis plants at Tiruchi Junction to provide clean drinking water to rail passengers.
While two plants are being established on platform 1, the main platform, one plant each is coming up on island platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Each reverse osmosis plant has the capacity to treat 1,000 litres of Cauvery water per hour and 20,000 litres per day. The railway administration is spending around Rs. 5.5 lakh for each “membrane-based water purification” plant. One of the plants on platform 1 has already been set up near the air-conditioned lounge, while installation work on the remaining.will get over before month end. Each plant will have an overhead tank to store 1,000 litres of pure and treated water. Water booths with a cluster of pipes will be set up very close to each plant through which clean water will be provided to the travellers, senior railway officials here told The Hindu.
Such plants will be established at Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Puducherry, Villupuram and Vriddhachalam stations.
