CPI(M) alleges harassment by CRPF

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel deployed in the violence-hit Nandigram area are harassing locals, a senior CPI (M) legislator alleged in the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday.

The jawans “inhumanly” harassed women and children as well as CPI (M) supporters during raids, Rabin Mondal said. The State government should intervene to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Mr. Mondal alleged that some jawans were colluding with Trinamool Congress activists in disturbing the process of restoration of peace.

Statement likely today

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is expected to make a statement on the matter on Thursday, Chief Government Whip Syed Mohd. Masih said.

Mr. Masih recently led a delegation of Left Front legislators to Nandigram to assess the situation and check on distribution of relief materials to the victims of violence.

On their return, some members of the delegation complained to Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb of the “partisan attitude” of the CRPF personnel.

Earlier, CPI(M) central committee member Shyamal Chakravarty, who had visited the area, also made similar complaints to Mr. Bhattacharjee.
