Contribute to development, industries told
Staff Reporter
KANCHEEPURAM: Collector Santosh K.Misra on Tuesday urged industrial units that have come up in Kancheepuram district to contribute their share, without fail, to ensure overall development of the district.
Stating that mere spurt in industrial activity would not help achieve overall development, he said the units, which have taken lands on lease or purchased them from local people, should come forward to take part in basic infrastructure development activities in the district or at least in the neighbourhood of the units. This should be in addition to their providing job opportunities to the local people.
Expressing his displeasure over the poor turnout of representatives from industrial units at the meeting on Corporate Social Responsibility, held recently at the Collectorate, Mr.Misra suggested that these companies could reduce the burden of the general public by contributing funds to various works taken up under ‘namakku naame’ scheme in rural areas.
Under this scheme, the beneficiaries had to contribute 30 per cent of the total expenditure, the Collector said. He was addressing a meeting at Tyagi Krishnamurthy Government Higher Secondary School, Mathur, near Oragadam, to mark donation of Rs.7.50 lakh worth furniture to the school by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited.
Apart from donating furniture to the school, the company in association with Udhi Eye Hospitals, Chennai, conducted a free eye screening camp for the local residents.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director, Power Sector, southern region, BHEL, E. Meenakshisundaram highlighted the community development programmes conducted by the company in different parts of the State. Senior deputy general manager (human resource) M.Munusamy said Rs.3 lakh had been allotted for the eye camp, which would include holding of cataract surgery at Chennai and distribution of spectacles free of cost, if required.
