Congress hopes court will deal with Modi “suitably”

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Wednesday pointed out that the Supreme Court’s contempt notice to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had come close on the heels of the Election Commission issuing notice to him for his “encounter deaths” remark, as also the “various strictures” passed against him and his government.

“The party has all along said that this is a man who rules in a fascist manner; doesn’t respect law and any constitutional authority and who came to power on the bodies of Godhra,” said party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan.

She expressed the hope that the Supreme Court would deal with him “suitably” and that the people of Gujarat would send Mr. Modi into political oblivion after the Gujarat elections.

Ms. Natarajan said that even the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, did not believe that Mr. Modi would come back to power.

“Mr. Vajpayee wrote an appeal to the people of Himachal Pradesh to vote his party to power. Ostensibly, he did not write a similar appeal to the people of Gujarat. It is clear that he does not believe that Mr. Modi will win,” she said.

She claimed that the party’s feedback after the first phase of polls on Tuesday was that Mr. Modi would be “voted out.”
