Rights panel to be apprised of “untouchability”

The practice prevails at Irunchirai in Virudhunagar district

Shopkeepers are not selling any commodity, including milk for babies, to Dalits They are forced to sell their cattle and not allowed to walk through paddy fields
VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will take up the incidences of “human rights violations” and the practice of “untouchability” at Irunchirai in the district with the National Commission for SC/ST and State Human Rights Commission.
After inspecting the village and interacting with the Dalits there, the party MLA, K. Mahendran, said that local shopkeepers were not selling any commodity, including milk for babies, to Dalits.
Besides, they were forced to sell their cattle and not allowed to walk through paddy fields.
Two Dalits beaten up
“The incidences would not have continued for nearly four months, had the police and revenue officials taken proper steps,” a party functionary, K. Samuel Raj, said.
It all started with caste Hindus beating up two Dalits, who questioned a washerman for his refusal to iron their clothes, he said.
“Revenue officials have asked the Dalits “to adjust” with the caste Hindus,” the MLA alleged.
It was the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government that successfully conducted elections in the four reserved panchayats where elections could not be held for 10 years. But, it was regretful that such gross human rights violations were happening in the constituency of State Minister for School Education, Thangam Thennarasu,” he said.
The MLA has taken up the issue with the Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare, A. Tamilarasi.
“I will draw the attention of the National Commission for SC/ST, when it visits Chennai on December 24. If the issue is not settled amicably, I will raise it in Assembly also,” he said.
The party district secretary, S. Balasubramanian, was present.
