Annapurnamma KURNOOL: “Steel woman of Salem” will celebrate completion of 100 years here on Wednesday. In fact, Annapurnamma completed 100 two years ago but her relatives have to celebrate the function now. She will take part in the “Mruthyunjana homam” as a symbol of conquering the death. In her 102nd year also, Annapurnamma does not suffer from any major ailment except mild blood pressure. In 2005, she suffered the first illness and fell unconscious and she was almost declared dead. The relatives arranged her funeral at her native place - Yellur near Kollapur in Mahabubnagar district. When she was being taken to the village in an ambulance, she regained consciousness. Later, it was found that she slipped into deep sleep due to excessive dose of sedatives. Strict vegetarianThe soft-spoken centenarian and mother three children, has said disciplined eating and hard-work have ensured her good health. “I love to eat every vegetarian food given by nature except onion and garlic,” she says. The iron-willed lady gets shaken at the utterance of the word “separation” because of deep tragedy in her childhood. She was born in a family of five sisters and two brothers at Salem in Tamil Nadu and married to priest from Kollapur in Mahabubnagar at the age of eight for a reverse dowry of Rs. 116. She will celebrate her centenary at the place of her grand-daughter Purnima and her husband Prasad Sarma.
