Jishnu, Sagar cause a flutter

BANGALORE: Unseeded Jishnu Sanyal of Air-India and Sagar Chopda of Maharashtra stormed into the semifinals of the Canara Bank all-India senior badminton championship at the KBA courts here on Monday.

Sanyal stopped Sachin Ratti of Railways 21-15, 14-21, 21-11, while Chopda beat the third-seeded Ravinder Singh of Uttar Pradesh 26-24, 21-16.

Sanyal will now meet the top seed P. Kashyap who beat Guru Sai Dutt of AP 21-17, 21-15. Chopda will take on the second-seeded Anand Pawar of Air-India, a 21-19 21-10 winner over Utsav Mishra. In the women’s section, Ashwini Ponnappa knocked out B.R. Meenakshi in the pre-quarterfinals. Ashwini defeated the fourth seed Dhanya Nair of Railways 21-13, 18-21, 21-13 to reach the semifinals.

Ashwini was joined in the last four by Trupti Murgunde (PSPB), Aditi Mutatkar and Gayatri Vartak, both of Maharashtra.
