Arsenal tastes first defeat

LONDON: Arsenal lost its first game of the Premier League season on Sunday, falling at Middlesbrough 2-1 to leave the Gunners with a one-point lead at the top of the standings.

Stewart Downing and Tuncay Sanli scored to give Middlesbrough its first win in any competition since September 1. Tomas Rosicky scored in injury-time for Arsenal.

Bolton beat Wigan 4-1, Tottenham defeated Manchester City 2-1 with a late goal from Jermain Defoe, and West Ham beat host Blackburn 1-0. Arsenal leads the league with 37 points, followed by Manchester United with 36.

The results: Blackburn 0 lost to West Ham 1 (Ashton 52); Bolton 4 (Scharner 3-og, Nolan 37, Davies 70, Anelka 89) bt Wigan 1 (Landzaat 14); Middlesbrough 2 (Downing 4-pen, Sanli 74) bt Arsenal 1 (Rosicky 90); Tottenham 2 (Chimbonda 45, Defoe 83) bt Manchester City 1 (Bianchi 61). — AP
