ERODE: A Rs. 240-crore development plan for Erode Corporation has been submitted to the Government, said Erode Municipal Chairman K. Kumar Murugesh. UpgradingErode Municipality would be upgraded to Municipal Corporation on January 1. The adjoining ‘Grade III’ Municipalities and four other panchayats would be included in Erode Municipal Corporation before 2011. He said, Erode and other proposed Corporation areas were getting Cauvery water, pumped from the Erode Municipal Headworks. Many complaints had been received from the public and Municipal councillors that owing to large scale discharge of effluents by some textile and tanning industries, Erode and neighbouring areas were not getting clean water, despite the water being treated two or three times. Water could be drawn from the Mettur Dam and taken directly to Erode through big pipelines, treated at Erode and supplied to residents. A sum of Rs. 40 crore was expected to be the cost of treatment. Officials said that in accordance with the River Water Tribunal instruction, no Cauvery water was drawn directly from the reservoir for drinking or other purposes, other than irrigation. Water supplyMr. Murugesh said, “We have decided to draw the water from Ooratchikottai, downstream of Cauvery near Bhavani. From there, water will be taken through pipelines to Erode and after treatment would be supplied to all the areas in and around Erode.” A Comprehensive Water supply scheme had been prepared at a cost of Rs. 60 crore and would be executed before the next Corporation election. In addition to this, proposals had been made for laying all the roads, and developing the drainage in Erode and other areas proposed to be linked to Erode Corporation. Perumpallam Odai would be cleaned, embankments built on the either side, and concrete flooring laid. Street lights, Corporation Commercial Complex, park development and other important issues could be executed at a total cost of Rs. 240 crore. If the proposal were sanctioned, work would be started in all areas soon. Mr. Murugesh said Erode Municipal Corporation could be a model for others in terms of development and functioning.
