Farmers worried following leaf-roller pest attack; remedial measures suggested

Agriculture Department expects a good yield

NAGAPATTINAM: Samba paddy harvest will begin in the first week of January and the standing crop raised in the delta region of Nagapattinam district is in a good condition.

The harvest of the samba crop, planted early in the Mayiladuturai belt and in a crucial stage, will begin in the last week of this month.

Showers in the last two days in some pockets in the district supplemented the irrigation needs of the crop.

However, farmers are worried following a leaf-roller pest attack on the samba and thaladi crops. P. R.Vaithiyanathan, Joint Director of Agriculture in Nagapattinam, told The Hindu on Friday that the Agriculture Department had already suggested various pest control measures.

He said that the samba crop was cultivated on 1.07 lakh (1.02 lakh hectares of normal area and 5,000 hectares of kuruvai shortfall area) this year in the district.

Besides, thaladi paddy crop was raised on 25,000 hectares as second crop in the short-term kuruvai crop area.

The Agriculture department expected a good yield this year.

He pointed out that a large number of farmers in the district had switched over to the latest system of rice intensification method of paddy cultivation to get good yield. Under this method, the cost of cultivation is reduced by 30 per cent and the water requirement is low compared to the traditional transplantation method.

Most farmers have raised the CR-1009 paddy variety followed by Bapatla, ADT-38 and Ponni.

No shortage of fertilizers

Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, said adequate quantity of fertilizers was kept at the extension centres of the Agriculture Department and village agricultural co-operative societies. He assured that he would take immediate steps to rush fertilizers wherever needed.
